The National Weather Service (NWS) issued winter weather advisories for five US states early Tuesday, with some areas expecting up to 14 inches of snow.
Challenging driving conditions may impact travel as many Americans travel across the country throughout the holiday season.
Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska were now under winter weather advisories.
Isolated areas in southeastern Wyoming, central and northern Nebraska, southern South Dakota, and central and western Montana were also affected. Areas north of central Idaho were also impacted.
While projected snowfall varied by location, the NWS predicted up to 14 inches throughout the Mission Mountains. At the time of writing, the winter weather alert was in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The service cautioned that decreasing temperatures might cause refreezes and hazardous roads on Tuesday morning. According to the NWS, moderate snow impacts may disrupt usual activity.
The NWS issues winter weather advisories “for any amount of freezing rain, or when two to four inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain) is expected to cause a significant inconvenience.”
NWS North Platte, Nebraska, posted on X, formerly Twitter: “The Winter Weather Advisory continues in force across north central Nebraska until 3 a.m. CST.
While the duration of winter storm warnings varied by state, the most recent warnings were in effect until 9 a.m. at the time of writing.
Forecasters have previously stated that numerous states may have lower-than-normal temperatures in the new year.
According to the NWS Climate Prediction Center, several Southeast states, including Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, have a 70-80 percent chance of seeing below-average temperatures between January 4 and January 10.
“Below normal temperatures are favored across the central and eastern U.S. during much of January,” according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The NWS recommended vehicles in affected areas to slow down and exercise caution when driving. It stated that the most recent road conditions for your state can be found by dialing 511.
