DDN – The Social Security Administration is happy to say that starting January 3, more than 72 million people will get new Social Security payments.
In retirement, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is in charge of many financial and insurance programs that give Americans monthly benefits to help them pay their bills and enjoy their time off.
That being said, because there are four programs, the federal agency shares a yearly payment schedule so that all recipients know when they will be paid throughout the year.
This is important information for people who get benefits from the Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs or plan to apply for them.
Social Security has confirmed the upcoming payment schedule for 2025
People who get Social Security will start getting their higher payments in January. These payments will include the new 2.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA) that was announced on October 10th.
The increase in the COLA is meant to help beneficiaries keep up with rising prices and keep their purchasing power. This is why the Bureau of Labor Statistics looks at inflation every year in order to figure out the cost of living adjustment for that year.
The 2.5% increase might not be as bad as retirees think, even though they were hoping for a bigger one. This is because the COLA increase and inflation are linked. This means that the cost of living will change if inflation goes down over time. Because of the new COLA increase, people who get RSDI will get the following amounts in payments:
Retirement benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $1,900 | $1,948 | $48 |
Age 62 | $2,710 | $2,778 | $68 |
Age 67 | $3,822 | $3,918 | $96 |
Age 70 | $4,873 | $4,995 | $122 |
Survivor benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $1,505 | $1,543 | $38 |
Individual | $1,773 | $1,817 | $44 |
2 Children | $3,653 | $3,744 | $91 |
Disability benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $1,537 | $1,575 | $38 |
Blind recipients | $2,590 | $2,655 | $65 |
Maximum payment | $3,822 | $3,918 | $96 |
When will Social Security beneficiaries receive their paychecks in January?
The 2025 Social Security payment schedule says that people who are eligible for the RSDI program and who claimed benefits before May 1997 will start getting their benefits on January 3.
Beneficiaries of RSDI who were born between January 1 and May 10, 1997, and got their first paycheck after May 1997 will still be getting benefits from the SSA after this payment.
Then, people who get RSDI and were born between January 11th and January 20th will get their monthly checks on January 15th. Finally, the last RSDI check will be sent by the federal government on January 22nd, but only to people who were born between January 21st and January 31st.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will also get their higher benefits in January. This is because Social Security offers benefits other than retirement and disability.
Because February 1 is a weekend, the Social Security Administration will move that payment to January 31, which was the last business day before the weekend. People who get SSI will get the following amounts of money today:
SSI benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $698 | $715 | $17 |
Individuals | $943 | $967 | $24 |
Couples | $1,415 | $1,450 | $35 |
Essential person | $472 | $484 | $12 |
