Sonoma County Boosts Eco-Friendly Transport with Seven New Electric Buses

Sonoma County is set to introduce seven new all-electric transit buses into its public transportation fleet. The Board of Supervisors has approved the purchase to phase out older natural gas-powered buses that have passed their prime. These electric newcomers, slated for delivery in November 2026, aim to massively reduce emissions and modernize the county’s transit system.

The transition to electric transportation is a conscious effort by Sonoma County, not just passively meeting but actively embracing state requirements for zero-emission public transit fleets by 2040. “Today, the Board’s ongoing investment in all-electric public transit will enhance safe, healthy mobility for residents, including essential access to major medical, educational, and commercial centers across the county,” said Supervisor David Rabbitt, as reported by the

These battery-operated buses are more than just a nod to environmental concerns. They represent a significant portion of the county’s fleet, bringing the total to nearly half electric by the end of 2026. The California Air Resources Board has made its mandate clear: no new fossil-fueled buses after 2029. Sonoma County is responding with a hearty affirmative, pulling together funding from federal, state, and local sources to cover the $1.25 million net cost per vehicle.

The buses are sourced from Gillig, a Livermore-based manufacturer that has been churning electric buses since 2019. They introduced their first all-electric bus in 2019 and have steadily increased the size of their battery-powered squad since then. Residents can look forward to riding in high-tech comfort with amenities such as Wi-Fi, reclining seats, and enhanced safety systems, much like on the existing fleet, but with the added benefit of knowing their commute is kinder to the planet.
