South Arlington Celebrates Completion of Harris Road Expansion, Enhancing Traffic Flow and Safety

After more than three years of construction, the much-anticipated rebuild of Harris Road in South Arlington is finally complete, the Public Works Department announced. Spanning from Calender Road to South Cooper Street, the revamped thoroughfare addresses a long-standing bottleneck, now widened from a two-lane asphalt road into a three-lane concrete one aimed to ease traffic flows.

Starting in the spring of 2021 and concluding in August 2024, upgrading the infrastructure was made possible with the funds from the 2014 Street Bond and additional Water & Sanitary Sewer Renewal funds. In a statement provided by the

, the improvements were aligned with the Arlington City Council’s goals to “Enhance Regional Mobility” and “Champion Great Neighborhoods.”

Notably, the project added several key features, including new sidewalks, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, and streetlight enhancements. Pavement markings were freshened up, and the storm drainage infrastructure received a significant boost as well, particularly with upgrading existing box culverts within Rush Creek. Complementing the surface changes, water and sanitary sewer systems beneath saw improvements, their sinews and bones strengthened against the ceaseless demand of the urban body.
