Southern California Buffeted by Strong Santa Ana Winds, High Wind and Red Flag Warnings Issued for San Diego and Surrounding Counties

As the Santa Ana winds continue to sweep across Southern California, the National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a series of weather advisories for the region. In a forecast published on their website, gusty winds are expected to persist into the morning, particularly along and below the coastal slopes of the mountains in Orange and San Bernardino counties, reaching speeds of 50 to 60 mph. Riverside and San Diego counties can anticipate slightly lower speed winds at 40 to 50 mph. However, the winds are forecasted to decrease gradually later in the morning and afternoon.

While coastal temperatures are marked to be several degrees cooler than the previous day, inland areas will slightly warm up. The weather shift is also set to quickly turn again, with the weather service predicting a cooling trend starting Sunday, as onshore flow strengthens and a low-pressure system pushes inland through California. The system is expected to bring gusty west winds to the mountains and deserts from late Monday into early Tuesday, along with a slight chance of showers for late Monday evening.

Mariners should be ready to face choppy conditions with east-northeast wind gusts up to 25 knots, though seas should subside by midday, according to a Special Marine Warning. For inland areas, humidity levels will remain low, with the driest conditions resulting in humidity dropping around 10 percent by day and improving slightly overnight. Fire weather conditions are thus heightened, prompting the issuance of Red Flag Warnings for multiple areas, including the San Diego County Inland Valleys and the Santa Ana Mountains.

has urged the public to remain vigilant, as the current conditions have necessitated a High Wind Warning for several counties until this afternoon. Additionally, efforts to prevent wildfires must remain a priority, as Santa Ana winds are known to spread flames rapidly. While the winds are expected to become weaker and more localized by tonight into Friday morning, residents should still carefully adhere to safety recommendations.
