Southwest Flight Evacuated at Denver Airport After Cellphone Ignites, Leading to Injuries and Delays

When a cellphone caught fire while Southwest Airlines Flight 3316 was still parked at the gate at Denver International Airport early on Friday morning, passengers on the flight headed for Houston began to feel uneasy. More than 100 people were quickly removed from the aircraft after the incident, which happened at around 7 a.m., according to Denver7.

The emergency’s nature and the crew’s prompt action are confirmed by multiple sources. A Southwest representative said the crew was able to swiftly put out a fire that had also caught fire in one of the seats.9News reports that while those in the front exited through the main door, individuals in the back used the rear emergency slides. One passenger was receiving burn treatment when their cell phone caught fire, and another passenger was slightly hurt during the evacuation, so it wasn’t without its consequences.

Furthermore, the trip for those on board was not considerably delayed by the evacuation brought on by the fire. The Denver Post reported that Southwest Airlines promised to try to get the evacuated customers on another trip to Houston. The updated departure was reported by flight tracking firm FlightAware, which as of 10:15 a.m. indicated a three-hour delay for the flight.
