Springfield Police Warn of Increased Skimming at ATMs, Urge Public Vigilance and Offer Safety Tips

The Springfield Police Department has issued an alert for businesses and individuals alike to exercise caution regarding the use of ATM and point-of-sale devices, due to a recent uptick in skimming device discoveries. The department’s concerns come after four skimmers were uncovered at various convenience store locations over a single weekend, as detailed in a Facebook post

by the

. One incident even involved a suspect who was caught on camera retrieving a skimming device from an in-store sales terminal.

Skimming remains a pernicious threat to both consumer security and confidence, with the

Spring Police Department

recommending daily inspections of these machines by store employees to ensure no illicit attachments have been added. In the statement provided by the police, individuals are advised never to use a debit card with a pin number unless absolutely necessary, and are instead suggested to use the credit option. The risk of skimming is significantly higher at privately-owned ATMs, where FICO reports that a staggering 60% of all skimming occurs.

As a preventive measure, people are urged to remain vigilant before using any machine, ensuring that card readers have not been tampered with. Loose, crooked, or damaged readers, or keypads where the numbers are unusually hard to press should both be taken as warning signs. When entering a PIN, the covering of the keypad with one’s other hand is also advised to shield the number from potential hidden cameras.

Anyone who comes across a skimming device is encouraged to immediately inform a staff member or contact the police. The

have requested the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect believed to be involved in these incidents. The suspect’s image can be viewed on the SPD’s social media post, and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the Detective Bureau or to anonymously Text-A-Tip. Concerned citizens can send a text to CRIMES (2-7-4-6-3-7), type SOLVE followed by their tip to assist in the investigative efforts.
