ROCK ISLAND (DDN) – A multi-vehicle incident happened on SR28 near Rock Island in Douglas County, resulting in two injuries and extensive vehicle damage, according to a Washington State Patrol news note.
Karl W. Sundquist, a 53-year-old Moses Lake driver, allegedly crossed from the westbound to eastbound lanes around 5:10 p.m.
His car struck head-on with a Ford Explorer, then hit a Dodge Ram before coming to a halt in a ditch on the westbound shoulder. A fourth vehicle, a Ford Expedition, swerved to escape Sundquist but was damaged.
The Ford Explorer was pushed into an eastbound ditch, the Dodge Ram came to a stop in the westbound lane, and the Ford Expedition sustained significant damage on the eastbound shoulder.
Sundquist suffered injuries, as did Araceli Olaldemedina, a 50-year-old Quincy passenger in the Ford Explorer. Both patients were taken to Central Washington Hospital for treatment. In addition, numerous other crash participants were transported to the hospital as a precaution.
The Washington State Patrol confirmed Sundquist’s intoxication, and charges are pending as the investigation continues. The agency is investigating the actual cause of the crash.
The incident created severe interruptions along SR28, with emergency services and law enforcement working for several hours to handle the scene and traffic, resulting in significant delays for local commuters.
