St. Louis County’s Suspension of Volunteer Program at Animal Shelter Raises Concerns Among Advocates

St. Louis County’s impending takeover of its animal shelter from the nonprofit Animal Protective Association (APA) has sparked a contentious pause in the facility’s volunteer program. According to

, the hiatus, planned to start early next year, is raising concerns among volunteers who fear the welfare of the shelter animals will suffer without their support.

For the past two years, the APA has infused new resources and reinvigorated programs within the shelter, and St. Louis County Health Department Director Dr. Kanika Cunningham acknowledges the improvements. “That previous history, I understand it. I’m aware of it, but I truly hope people will give me, my leadership and my team the opportunity to do something different for the shelter,” Dr. Cunningham told

. Meanwhile, Dr. Cunningham assures the public that the shelter will not neglect the animals’ care during the transition and teases the potential for a “revamped volunteer program” involving community partnerships.

Questions linger, however, as the county has not specified the duration of the volunteer program suspension, which leaves nearly 400 volunteers in limbo, uncertain about the future of their roles and the shelter’s operation. The APA has expressed its commitment to maintaining support until the county’s takeover, demonstrating the high value it places on its volunteer workforce. “A robust volunteer program is an essential part of the APA’s operations of our shelters. We are deeply grateful to our volunteers for all they make possible,” said KT Stuckensheider, director of communications for the APA, in a statement obtained by
