St. Louis Issues Precautionary Boil Water Advisory After Major Water Main Break

A large 36 water main break has resulted in poor water pressure in some areas, prompting the City of St. Louis Water Division to issue a boil water advisory. Until the advisory is lifted, businesses and residents in the impacted neighborhoods are encouraged to boil water for cooking, drinking, and tooth brushing.

Although the precise boundaries have not been specified, the City of St. Louis website states that the boil water alert applies to portions of North and South City. Until the restriction is withdrawn, residents are advised to boil their water every day. The public will be informed once the water is safe again once the city repairs the damaged water main. A drop in water pressure that can let pollutants into the system is the reason for the advisory. Until water samples indicate that it is safe, it will remain in place. Before using water for cooking or drinking, residents are instructed to bring it to a boil for three minutes.

Residents are reassured by the city that repairs are being made in order to promptly return to normal service. Residents who see discolored or hazy water should run the cold water tap until it clears up after the advisory is lifted. For the most recent information on the advisory and testing, the public can visit the Water Division’s website or give the Customer Service Center a call.
