Start of 2025 Marked by Violence Two Dead, Eight Injured in Series of Slashings, Stabbings, and Shootings in New York City

Two individuals were killed and eight others injured as 2025 began with many slashings, stabbings, and two shootings across the Big Apple, according to authorities.

A 50-year-old man was found slashed in the neck around 4:20 a.m. at the corner of West 137th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem, authorities said.

He was transferred to Harlem Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to authorities. A 39-year-old guy, characterized as a person of interest was detained for interrogation, according to investigators.

The motivation for the incident is being investigated.

The second shooting occurred about an hour later, when Mario Fowler, 46, was killed and a 23-year-old male was injured in front of an apartment building on East 170th Street near Clay Avenue in the Claremont Village district of the Bronx, according to cops.

Fowler, who was shot in both legs, was able to flee into his own building down the street, where someone contacted 911, according to authorities.

According to investigators, he was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and died from his injuries.

According to authorities, the younger victim was located around the corner with a graze wound on his chin. A shooter approached a gathering standing outside the building and started fire, striking the two males.

It is unknown if either man was the intended target.

There have been no arrests in connection with the tragic shooting.

Three guys, ages 26, 27, and 30, were cut in the head on Grand Street near Roebling Street in Williamsburg around 4:50 a.m., according to cops. They were brought to Woodhull Medical Center and were classified in stable condition.

The motivation for those slashings is unknown.

An hour after the iconic ball dropped in Times Square, a 51-year-old man was knifed in the stomach during a fight at 1 a.m. at 38th Street and 8th Avenue, police said.

He was brought to Bellevue and listed in stable condition.

Two males were stabbed in the stomach and hand when they faced up at 2 a.m. at West 49th Street and Eighth Avenue, according to police.

The violence continued during the day, with a 40-year-old man being shot in the neck at 1 p.m. just outside St. James Park on Grand Concourse near East 192nd Street, police said.

He was brought to St. Barnabas Hospital and was classified in stable condition.

No arrests have been made, and investigators are still looking for a motive.
