Storm chances increase as temperatures rise

Today, New Mexico is seeing less showers and storms. Hotter and drier weather will continue to arrive through Saturday.

Although Wednesday was a dryer day in some regions of New Mexico, storms continued to bring heavy rain this afternoon. A few showers and storms are expected to continue tonight, but they will clear by Thursday morning. Drier air will move into western New Mexico Thursday, but a surface boundary will bring more moisture and lift to northeast New Mexico. This is where a couple of strong to severe storms capable of heavy rain may pass tomorrow afternoon. Storms are also probable across the whole central mountain range and eastern New Mexico.

Drier air continues to move in on Friday and Saturday, with only a few showers and storms developing primarily over the high summits. Temperatures will also rise, with highs exceeding the norm by Friday. However, even hotter weather is expected for Saturday and Sunday. Rain and thunderstorm possibilities will return to the southern part of New Mexico on Sunday afternoon, with a few isolated storms in the northern highlands.

A plume of monsoon moisture will continue to move into the state early next week. It will produce widespread afternoon showers and storms Monday afternoon, with the exception of northwest New Mexico. The good news is that this plume of monsoon moisture will shift west by the middle of next week, providing much-needed rain to the Four Corners region. Farmington has had only 0.01 inches of rain since June 15, but this will change next week. However, eastern New Mexico will see drought conditions.
