We used Saturday Night Science to study the cities in Virginia that have the highest percentage of households with same-sex couples in 2024. The information is sourced from the American Community Survey 2013-2018 vintage. This survey provides details on gender based on household status. Unfortunately, the Census no longer provides data at the city level. Therefore, this report includes the most up-to-date information available.
- The city in Virginia with the highest number of households where same-sex couples live is Wise. 5.12% of households in Wise consist of gay individuals.
- Richmond, Virginia has the highest number of same-sex households, with a total of 582 gay households.
- Virginia ranks as the 32nd most gay-friendly state in the United States.
About 0.84% of people living in Virginia identify as gay. That means there are a total of 28,285 households with gay individuals in The Old Dominion.
Our aim with this post is to use Saturday Night Science and data to identify the cities in Virginia with the highest LGBTQ+ population. Based on our analysis of 87 cities in Virginia with over 1,000 households, we have identified the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in Virginia for 2024.

Method to Determine the Best Cities for Same-sex Households in Virginia
To determine the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in Virginia, we analyzed data from Saturday Night Science and the 2013-2018 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census. We examined:
- Percentage of all households that are unmarried, same sex partners
We only analyzed non-CDPs that have more than 1,000 households. We assigned a ranking from 1 to 87 to each place based on the percentage of unmarried, same-sex partner households. The city with the highest percentage of these households is considered the most gay.
In the end, it turned out to be the place with the highest percentage of gay households, at 5.12%. If you want to see the list of all the places in the state ranked from the most LGBTQ+ friendly to the least, you can skip to the end. We have made changes to this report for the year 2024. This report is our tenth edition of ranking the most LGBTQ+ friendly places in Virginia.
