The community in Northwest Baltimore has been experiencing unsettling levels of violence as an alarming number of senior citizens have been prey to a succession of carjackings, with the latest incident occurring this past Friday when a 62-year-old woman was menaced with a firearm and had her car stolen shortly before midnight.
Just a day before the latest carjacking, a 79-year-old disabled man was assaulted by two teenagers who took off with his SUV in an attack, leaving him with shoulder pains. The Baltimore Police Department followed the stolen vehicle with their helicopter until it crashed, resulting in eight teenagers being detained. However, only two, aged 15, were arrested, and the other six received medical attention and were released to their guardians, as reported byWBALTV.
This distressing pattern began earlier in the week on Monday, when an 83-year-old woman was targeted in a similar attack on Park Heights Avenue, leaving her shaken and a 16-year-old in custody for his connection to the crime and other multiple robberies, according to information provided byFox Baltimore.
The local police commissioner, identified as Richard Woreley, has briefed the public at a safety meeting about the staggering 233% increase in carjackings by juveniles compared to last year, with a particular emphasis on the Northwest District, where incidents have surged by 200% over the past 7 days alone. These figures corroborate a troubling escalation in teen-perpetrated crimes despite a decrease in fatal and non-fatal shootings across the city. Many residents, like Grace Aranga-Hill, expressed their dismay and concern, with Aranga-Hill recounting toWBALTV, “That’s terrible. I don’t think that anybody should do that to anybody, let alone a 79-year-old man.”
