In relation to the September 4 shooting death of 37-year-old Maria Flores in an apartment building on 9430 Concourse Drive, authorities have made a significant arrest. The Houston Police Department reports that a 30-year-old suspect named Daniel Vargas Cartagena is charged with capital murder after the Texas Department of Public Safety apprehended him in Karnes County.
Following an investigation by the HPD Homicide Division, which arrived on the site at around 11:40 p.m. and discovered Flores unconscious and suffering from several gunshot wounds, Cartagena was taken into custody. At the site, the paramedics from the Houston Fire Department declared her dead. Surveillance footage of Cartagena walking with Flores just before the event was captured helped to link him to the crime.
Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan outlined the crucial evidence that helped identify Cartagena in the Houston Police Department’s statement, noting that “a preliminary investigation indicated Flores was seen walking with the suspect, described only as a Hispanic male, just prior to the shooting.”
As he awaits extradition back to Harris County, the defendant is currently dealing with the legal ramifications of the allegations brought before the 337th State District Court.
