The Citrus Heights Police Department reported that an alarm at a store inside Sunrise Mall on Tuesday morning signaled a burglary in progress. Officers responding to the scene found the remains of the crime, including a broken glass that starkly testified to the breach and the store’s interiors exposed, including multiple jewelry display cases that had been smashed in a blatant smash-and-grab operation.
With the help of mall security’s keen observation and thorough suspect description, officers were able to swiftly track down a man who was attempting to flee the area on foot. They saw something strange: unless someone was concealing more than trivial secrets, why would someone carry a luggage at such an early hour? The individual appeared to have made a hasty getaway because of the fresh cuts and blood on his hand when he was confronted. His injuries were eventually attributed by police to glass fragments found at the crime site.
Law enforcement’s long arm prevented the suspect, a 34-year-old Auburn man, from fleeing, and the Citrus Heights Police Department subsequently verified on social media that “inside the suitcase officers located over $91,000.00 in stolen jewelry which was taken from the business during the burglary.” The legitimate owner of the burglary’s loot was given back.
After his gambit ended in handcuffs, the man was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools and was subsequently taken into Sacramento County Jail. Although his name has not been made public, police records now reflect his conduct.
