Suspected Murderer Fakes Wilderness Emergency in Plot for $8 Million Insurance Scam

The arrest of Nicholas Wayne Hamlett by Monroe County authorities has drawn national notice. Hamlett is a suspect in a terrifying murder plan and a false story about animal danger. In a call that was first reported by WVLT, Monroe County E911 received a report from Hamlett claiming to be an injured hiker who was being chased by a bear. But as police have stated, Hamlett’s planned story was a clever ploy.

Under false pretenses, Hamlett told responders he was in trouble after falling and being chased by a bear in his emergency call, which was recorded by WBIR and acquired through an open records request. The phone signal came from the Skyway Falls on Branch Road, and it was running on a 2% battery. “He’s fallen off the cliff at some waterfalls,” a Polk County dispatcher informed Monroe County, adding, “He fell on his head.” He’s been hurting a lot. claimed he was unable to move his leg.

The call’s responders found a body eventually confirmed as that of Steven Lloyd, 34, of Knoxville, who had originally been wearing false identification under the name “Brandon Andrade.” When authorities connected the suspect to life insurance policies worth around $8 million under Andrade’s stolen name, the case became even more complicated and revealed a sinister financial motivation for Lloyd’s murder. The WBIR investigation detailed these discoveries.

According to information from WATE, Hamlett was apprehended last Sunday after being apprehended in South Carolina on a tip from a hospital employee. His violent background included a guilty plea to attempted murder and assault in Alabama in 2011. He was released from prison in July of 2016. His initial hearing was scheduled for today, but it was postponed because Hamlett was under suicide watch, which complicated the judicial process. It was Sheriff Bill Franklin of Elmore County, Alabama, who informed 6 News of Hamlett’s criminal history. As Monroe County Circuit Court awaits Hamlett’s arraignment, the case is pending.
