Suspects in Nashville Jefferson Street Shooting Charged, Court Reveals Videotaped Evidence

As the judiciary confronted defendants connected to the tragic Jefferson Street shooting, the court proceedings took a somber turn. Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown appeared in court on charges of criminal homicide in connection with the shooting death of Vonquae Johnson, 24, according to WKRN. Security footage that showed the accused starting a gunfire that killed Johnson and injured at least nine others, including children, gave rise to a troubling story.

The Metro Nashville Police Department reported the confrontation as gang-related violence that took place near homecoming celebrations at Tennessee State University. There was only one gun found at the scene. The court heard how the investigation was hampered by the inability to find cooperative witnesses as Detective Adam Reese of the MNPD’s homicide unit dug into the case’s complexities. NewsChannel 5 also reported the tragic fact that three of the injured were minors, the youngest of whom was only 12 years old.

The involvement of Kiyahn Hayes-Woods, 23, and Corey D. Johnson, 31, who have also been charged with additional guns violations, further complicates the case. Hayes-Woods is charged with felony reckless endangerment and unauthorized gun possession, while Corey Johnson, who is said to be the victim’s brother, is charged with aggravated assault and felony reckless endangerment. As evidenced by courtroom revelations where suspects appeared segregated and under close observation, a pre-trial hearing notably produced sufficient evidence to move the case forward to trial.

MNPD Detective Adam Reece’s account of the circumstances leading up to the shooting was one of the key pieces of testimony. “After the bump, Davis turns to face Johnson, who is sort of backing away. Reece testified in court, saying, “And I think I counted six seconds later that Davis drew his gun from his waistband after the shoulder bump,” according to WSMV.
