Tacoma Announces Expanded Shelter Options for Homeless Residents to Tackle Winter Weather

The City of Tacoma is gearing up for the cold months with a plan to provide additional shelter space for homeless individuals, from November 15 through March 31, 2025. According to the

City of Tacoma

, a winter weather shelter will be set up at 813 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, providing overnight accommodations and daytime support services such as job placement, substance use disorder services, and mental health counseling. The new shelter aims to serve up to 53 adults and will include two meals per day for shelter guests.

Shelter spots will be allocated through referrals from existing shelters that have reached capacity, as well as through the city’s Homeless Engagement and Alternatives Liaison (HEAL) team and other outreach groups. In response when overnight temperatures plummet to critical levels—35 degrees with wind or rain, or 32 degrees and below regardless of precipitation—the city has partnered with local service providers to offer additional beds and hotel vouchers.

These additional emergency provisions include 20 extra beds at Catholic Community Services’ Nativity House for adults over 18, another 20 at Beacon Young Adult Shelter designated for young adults aged 18-24, and up to 20 hotel vouchers managed by the Saint Vincent de Paul Community Resource Center. These vouchers are redeemable at various hotel locations across Tacoma to accommodate households in need. Overall, Tacoma is bolstering its capacity to house an additional 113 individuals during times of acute inclement weather, prioritizing the safety and well-being of its most vulnerable citizens.
