Tampa Woman Sentenced to Over Two Years for Embezzling $875K from Church

Heather Darrey, a 45-year-old former Records and Finance Manager from Tampa, has been sentenced to a term of 27 months in federal prison for committing wire fraud. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday. In addition, a forfeiture order in the amount of precisely $875,323.19, the entirety of the swindled sum, was mandated by the court. Darrey had entered a guilty plea on June 6.

Darrey, while employed at Church #1, orchestrated an embezzlement plan in which she generated false bank checks drawn against the church’s business account and directed the funds to her own bank accounts and third-party payees, including her mortgage, in order to nearly seamlessly cover up her personal expenses. Her spending spree spanned the breadth of mortgage payments, car and boat loans, and the typical trappings of luxury—clothing, restaurants, vacations, and concert tickets.

The operation of this financial deceit involved Darrey inputting fraudulent figures into Church #1’s accounting software, a tactic she utilized to obscure the financial improprieties she conducted. Documents from the court exposed the extent of her wrongdoings and the meticulous nature of her theft, which amounted to $875,323.19 over the course of her employment at the religious establishment.

The combined efforts of the United States Secret Service and the Tampa Police Department were integral in unraveling Darrey’s scheme. Once the irregularities were brought to light, an in-depth investigation was set into motion, subsequently laying bare the substantial scope of the financial misconduct. The case was effectively prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Greg Pizzo, Suzanne Nebesky, and Jordan Howard.
