After reportedly leaving a dead newborn baby inside a Safe Haven Baby Box at a nearby hospital last month, an 18-year-old woman in Idaho was arrested. Authorities said that Angela N. Newberry was arrested on Thursday and charged with one count of felony failure to disclose a death to law police.
The terrible event occurred on October 13, 2024, at the Grove Creek Medical Center in Blackfoot, Idaho, approximately 250 miles east of Boise, according to news releases from the Blackfoot Police Department and Safe Haven Baby Boxes. When a youngster is placed inside the facility’s baby box, an alert is sent off.
On that particular date, a baby box alarm went off, and medical center personnel responded right away. But when they arrived, employees discovered something gruesome.
Within a minute, the baby was taken out of the bassinet by the medical staff, according to the Safe Haven release guidelines. When they removed it, they soon discovered that the baby had died long before it had been put in the baby box. Idaho’s Safe Haven Law permits the surrender of a healthy, uninjured newborn. Because it did not fit the requirements for a Safe Haven surrender, this was not a legitimate surrender under state law.
Police explained that there are no legal ramifications if custodial parents turn over a newborn at one of the boxes within 30 days of the child’s birth.
The Twin Falls Police Department eventually took up the case after Blackfoot Police Department officers arrived on the scene and began a death investigation. Authorities said they were able to identify Newberry as the person who left the dead baby after more than a month of inquiry.
18-year-old Twin Falls resident Angel N. Newberry was taken into custody on a felony Bingham County arrest warrant for neglecting to notify law enforcement and the coroner of a death, according to police, following two months of hard work by the Blackfoot Bingham Joint Detective Division. On the basis of the aforementioned warrant, Angel has been taken to the Bingham County Jail and booked.
Authorities stressed that only a limited amount of information will be made public because of the delicate nature of the continuing investigation and the possibility of additional criminal charges against Newberry.
The Safe Haven Baby Box at Grove Creek was installed in July, making it the first spot in the state where infants might be left anonymously and safely, according to a story from Nampa, Idaho ABC station KIVI.
