Teen Charged with Criminal Homicide Following Deadly Shooting at Nashville’s WeGo Bus Station

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in a deadly incident at Nashville’s WeGo bus stop. According to WKRN, the victim, identified by the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), is Braden Caldwell, who suffered critical injuries in what seemed to be a targeted attack. Shamari Bailey, 15, has been taken into custody as the suspect and is being charged with criminal homicide.

Around 4 p.m. yesterday, the altercation broke out at the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center at WeGo Central. Caldwell was shot twice as a result of a physical altercation between two youths that swiftly turned violent. After being taken to the pediatric department of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he passed away from his wounds. According to The Tennessean, WeGo said following the incident that all bays at the station’s Upper Level would be temporarily closed, with operations shifting to the Lower Level bays.

Specialized Investigations TITANS detectives and MNPD homicide detectives are still investigating. Bailey was taken into custody without incident Friday night at an apartment building on University Court. Officials are still examining security footage and witness accounts in an effort to reconstruct the events leading up to the incident. According to the MNPD, “There is about 15,000 people that come in through this station every single day, so security is definitely a main priority for WeGo and the police department.”

Notably, the shooting marks the second fatal incident at a WeGo station or bus stop in as many days. According to WSMV, MNPD has stepped up security at the bus station in response to the shooting, especially during the evening commute.
