Teen Suspect Indicted in Halloween Horror, Charged with Double Murder in Downtown Orlando Mass Shooting

Jaylen Edgar, 17, was indicted on 11 counts by an Orange County grand jury on charges related to a mass shooting that occurred in downtown Orlando during Halloween festivities. Edgar faces two charges of First Degree Murder with a Firearm, seven counts of Attempted First Degree Murder with a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor, and Culpable Negligence with Personal Injury, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Edgar is accused of firing rapidly into a crowd of thousands of people during the Nov. 1 event, which swiftly transformed a joyous occasion into a horrific spectacle. Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr., 19, were among the victims; they were both killed. Other others were hurt in the confusion as well, including a woman who was stomped as she was escaping the area for safety. Edgar was quickly apprehended at the crime site, according to the Orlando Police Department.

Edgar was formally indicted after prosecutors made their case to the grand jury on Wednesday. Despite being a minor at the time of the alleged offense, he will face adult charges. The State Attorney’s Office statement emphasizes that Edgar is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law and that an indictment does not equate to a conviction.

Updates on court hearings and other case-related legal proceedings should be available on the Orange County Clerk of Court’s website.
