Tennessee’s Annual Gun Deer Hunting Season Kicks Off November 23

Deer hunters across Tennessee are gearing up as the 2024-25 statewide gun hunting season is set to begin on Saturday, November 23, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, in what is an annual tradition for many, the season opens each year on the Saturday preceding the national day of gratitude and feast.

This year’s hunting season extends the opportunity for sportsmen to not only use traditional guns but also allows for the usage of muzzleloaders and archery equipment during the same period, for those who prefer a different kind of challenge, they’re bringing out more than just the typical rifles with a variety of tools that cater to differing hunting preferences and skill sets.

According to theTennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), hunters are limited to taking two antlered bucks throughout the season, with the stipulation that no more than one antlered deer can be claimed per day; furthermore, each designated hunting unit across the state has specific antlerless bag limits, varying from three per day in Units 1, 2, and 3 to a limited two for the season in Units 4, 5, and 6, although exceptions exist for participants in the Earn-A-Buck program or in cases involving a replacement buck in counties affected by Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

Changes for the 2024-25 seasons include newly implemented hunting units in Tennessee, and hunters are advised to consult the officialTennessee Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Guideto ensure they are up-to-date with the latest information specific to their hunting unit in addition to complete license requirements; this is particularly significant for those who are new to the sport or those who haven’t kept up with the changes that might affect where and what they can hunt, making it imperative that they stay informed.

Hunters born on or after January 1, 1969, must present proof that they have successfully completed a hunter education course, or alternatively, they can carry an Apprentice Hunter Education Permit while hunting it should be noted that the TWRA provides these educational resources online at no cost and also offers in-person options for those wishing to obtain the necessary credentials.

The hunt for deer with guns will continue through January 5, 2025, but young hunters looking forward to their time in the woods will have a chance during the second Young Sportsman Hunt, set to take place on January 11-12, as per the TWRA schedule, a weekend specifically set aside for youth under the age of 16 to engage in the hunting experience under the supervision of a non-hunting adult, thereby fostering a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
