Tense Lockdown at Tempe’s Marcos de Niza High School; Student Arrested for Allegedly Bringing Gun on Campus

Following a heated altercation with a firearm on campus, a student at Tempe’s Marcos de Niza High School was placed under arrest on Tuesday. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the incident started when a social media video resurfaced on Monday showing what appeared to be a student in the school restroom brandishing a gun.

Tempe Police got involved right away and got in touch with the school administration to find and identify the person. After a “concerned adult” presented a second video on Tuesday, officials were unsure if it was the same or a new incident, raising concerns despite the student who was named in the video’s initial denials. According to 12 News, the 15-year-old suspect fled the school after being confronted by police as they arrived, causing Marcos de Niza and two other local elementary schools to be placed under lockdown.

The student was arrested in a nearby backyard after Tempe Police Department quickly moved to secure the area and established a perimeter. Authorities found a black handgun similar to the one in the social media video alongside the student.

After the event produced a brief but noticeable interruption, the lockdown was lifted and schools resumed regular operations by 9 a.m. Tempe Police emphasized the value of community vigilance in such situations by saying, “This student was swiftly identified and arrested, thanks to the community members from Marcos de Niza who immediately notified the school about the existence of the video.”
