Texas Attorney General Secures $83 Million Settlement From Kroger for State’s Opioid Abatement Efforts

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced an $83 million settlement with supermarket chain Kroger, addressing claims that Kroger contributed to the opioid crisis within the state. According to a press release from the

Office of the Attorney General

, this is part of ongoing legal battles against pharmaceutical entities believed to have played a part in the opioid epidemic, with settlements from such cases earmarked for opioid remediation efforts. This brings Paxton’s total amount obtained in similar legal actions to over $3 billion.

In efforts to ensure the funds are put to good use, Texas Political Subdivisions, including local and county governments, actively involved in the Opioid Multidistrict Litigation, are prompted to join the settlement. By participating, these subdivisions can benefit directly from payments and grant money aimed at combating the effects of opioids. Local entities looking to get in on the deal have until December 29, to sign up, although care should be taken for understanding the requirements for the opioid abatement funding available from the Texas Opioid Council.

“We’ve worked relentlessly to hold major pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies accountable for their role in the national opioid epidemic that has created so much suffering in our State,” Paxton told the

Office of the Attorney General.

The settlements, he explains, are a salient part of Texas’ strategy to secure resources vital for community healing and prevention programs. The funds obtained are to be managed by the Texas Opioid Council, which oversees the state’s strategy on opioid abatement.
