Michigan offers a spooky assortment of haunted places because of its tragic history, varied landscapes, and rich history.

This Midwestern state is a veritable gold mine for paranormal fans hoping to experience the paranormal, with everything from ancient lighthouses to abandoned asylums.

Come along with us as we investigate some of Michigan’s most haunted locations, where it is rumored that there is little difference between the living and the dead.

Old Presque Isle Light

Legends from the area describe a past lightkeeper’s wife who was imprisoned in the tower until she lost her mind. At night, her screams have been heard on the wind.

George Parris is the subject of another mythology that envelops this lighthouse. George and his wife Lorraine moved there to serve as caretakers and guides when the property was turned into a museum in the 1990s.

George loved to have fun and enjoyed pulling practical jokes.

When dad passed away in 1992 from a heart attack, Lorraine was shocked to see that the light was still on even though the wiring had been severed years earlier. It is reported that the light turns on every day at dusk and goes out at morning.

At least one little girl who visited the lighthouse claimed to have seen George’s apparition inside; no one is certain how this occurs.

Despite not knowing George, she was able to recognize him when someone showed her his picture. It was him, she added, “just a brighter white.”

Traverse City State Hospital

Although Traverse City State Hospital was virtually entirely renovated in the 2000s, there are rumors that the original building from 1885—when it was constructed as the Northern Michigan Asylum—still stands.

This facility was said to be beautiful, unlike some of the others at the time, where patients were respected and straitjackets were not permitted.

It continued to run till 1989. Witnesses claim that the building is haunted. Lights would turn on even when the electricity was unplugged when it was not in use.

It’s reported that voices and screams reverberate in the rooms, and that ghostly youngsters rush through the halls. There is rumored to be a monster in the cellar and a ghostly priest who committed suicide in the chapel.

Anchor Inn

We are a century-old family-owned restaurant, lounge, and historic hotel. Witnesses to paranormal activity dating back to the 1940s and 1950s have been with us for decades.

Many paranormal investigators have come to visit us, and they have gathered a ton of proof, including photos, videos, eyewitness reports, and EVPs that are insane.

We have a past that includes living on logging land, Indian territory, a brothel, and ties to Capone and the Purple Gang. On the opposite side of our building, there’s rumours of a vortex.

Pere Cheney

In the center of Michigan sits a ghost town called Pere Cheney. There were 1,500 people living here during the height of its population, but the town was abandoned after a string of illnesses killed most of them.

According to local mythology, this disaster was brought about by a witch who was banished and hung in the forest. It is rumored that she haunts the cemetery and leaves handprints on guests’ autos.

Rifle Range Trail

An elderly fort soldier was set up to assassinate another soldier by shooting him. Hanged on the Rifle Range trail. He is still pursuing revenge, though.

There are rumors that as you travel the trail, you will feel gunshots shooting past your ears, have your hair yanked, hear the crunch of leaves, dirt, and twigs behind you if you’re alone, get touched, and occasionally be flung to the ground. Going at midnight is ideal.
