The US Cities Where Populations Decreased the Most in 2023

SmartAsset recently conducted a study where they ranked 344 of the largest U.S. cities. The ranking was based on the population declines observed over a span of five years, from 2017 to 2022.

Study Finds

  • Paradise, Nevada experienced a significant decrease in its population, which is quite unusual considering the overall population growth observed in the Southwest region. Paradise stands out among the cities in Nevada, Arizona, and Texas when it comes to population growth between 2017 and 2022. The most recent population count stands at 183,321, showing a decrease from the previous count of 235,123 residents in 2017. The rate of decline in this area is nearly twice as high as that of Jackson, Mississippi, which experienced a decrease of 12.7%.
  • California cities account for 40% of the top 25 locations with the highest population decline. El Monte experienced a significant decline in its population, with a decrease of 9.3%. In a recent ranking, San Francisco has secured the sixth position with a notable 8.6% decrease over a span of five years. Several cities experienced significant changes in their percentages. Santa Ana saw a decrease of 7.8%, while Glendale and Inglewood had decreases of 6.8% and 6.3% respectively. On the other hand, San Jose saw an increase of 6.2%, and Pasadena, Concord, and Corona had decreases of 5.9%, 5.5%, and 5.0% respectively. These cities topped the list in terms of these changes.
  • In a startling turn of events, the population of Elgin, Illinois has experienced a significant decline of 7% within a span of just one year. In a city that has experienced a five-year population decline of 4.2%, Elgin stands out with the highest one-year population decline. The population of this area decreased from 117,850 in the previous year to 109,634 in 2022.

Places With the Biggest 5 Year Population Declines

Paradise, Nevada

Paradise has seen a notable decline in its population, with a decrease of approximately 22.0% in the last five years. As a result, the population of Paradise in 2022 stands at 183,321. According to recent data, the gender distribution in the city slightly favors females, with women making up 50.9% of the population.

East Los Angeles, California

East LA has experienced a significant decrease in population, with a decline of approximately 10.0% over the past five years. In the latest census report, the population count for 2022 revealed a total of 112,965 residents. Interestingly, men slightly outnumbered women, making up 51.7% of the population.

El Monte, California

In El Monte, the population has experienced a significant decline of around 9.3% over the course of the last five years. In the latest update, the population of the city stands at 105,307, with an almost equal distribution between men and women.

Hialeah, Florida

Hialeah experienced a significant decrease in its population, with an 8.1% decline in residents. The latest count for 2022 stands at 220,274, with women making up 52.9% of the population.

Santa Ana, California

The population of Santa Ana experienced a decline of around 7.8%. In 2022, the city’s population stands at 308,203, with a nearly equal distribution of 50.6% men and 49.4% women.
