Most Dangerous Places in Oregon

Medford

This city in Jackson County has seen a rise in crime, similar to many other rapidly growing cities. In fact, in 2012, it had the highest crime rate per 100,000 people compared to all the places we analyzed. Medford had the second highest number of crimes overall in the state because it ranked No. 2 in both violent crimes and property crimes per 100,000 people. However, it slightly improved its ranking in the category of murders per person, coming in seventh place. Some of the other cities in our top ten had worse rankings in this category. Overall, people living in Medford had a 1 in 16 chance of experiencing any kind of crime.

Portland

In 2012, Portland had the third highest number of violent crimes and property crimes per person in the state. Looking at the positive side, the city had a lower number of murders per person compared to The Dalles. However, overall, it still ranked second with a one in 18 chance of being a victim of a crime.

Ontario

Medford and Portland have unfortunately surpassed Ontario in terms of murders per person. Ontario ranked 13th in this category, while Medford and Portland ranked seventh. However, Ontario outperformed them, as well as everywhere else, in the total number of crimes. In 2012, Ontario had the highest number of total crimes per person compared to all the other places we examined. That means it had the highest number of both violent crimes and property crimes per person. Residents in this area had a high likelihood of being a crime victim, with a 1 in 12 chance.

Gresham

Gresham, a city in Multnomah County, has a lower ranking than Portland in terms of property crime and total number of crimes. However, when it comes to violence, Gresham is one of the worst. In 2012, this city had the fourth highest rate of violent crimes per 100,000 people in the state. These crimes included rapes, assaults, robberies, and, unfortunately, the third highest number of murders. Overall, residents in this area may have a lower chance of being a victim of a crime. However, they are more likely to experience violence compared to other places.

Pendleton

In 2012, Pendleton had the second highest number of murders per person in the state. In other categories, it performed slightly better, ranking 14th for violent crimes and 6th for property crimes. Overall, residents in this area had a higher likelihood of being involved in a crime compared to other places, with a 1 in 19 chance.

Salem

Salem is the political capital of the state, but that doesn’t mean it’s free from crime. Actually, when we compared different places, Salem had the third highest number of murders per 100,000 people. It also had a high ranking for property crimes and overall crimes, coming in 12th place in both categories. Overall, the residents here had a 1 in 22 chance of experiencing a crime. To understand this better, let’s consider West Linn, which was ranked as the safest on our list. The residents there had a very low chance of being the victim of a crime, with only a 1 in 101 chance.
