If you live in one of the states that’s growing the fastest, you might be in an area of the country that’s getting too crowded. The number of people living in the US rose by more than 2 million last year. Most of America’s population growth was due to natural growth, which means that more people were born than died. On the other hand, immigration only played a small role in our country’s growth.
The rate of population rise was not the same in any one state. There are states that are getting smaller and states that are getting bigger. It also happens in that area. The South and West are getting more people, but the Northeast and Midwest are not.
Which American state will grow the fastest in 2024? Idaho is the U.S. state with the most rapid growth. It has grown more than 1.71 percent since 2010 to beat Utah and take the top spot.
But let’s say you don’t want long-term growth and instead want something right now. Then who is at the top of the list? That would be South Carolina, which had a growth rate of over 2% last year and was the only state to go over that mark.
The Fastest Growing States in the US
Idaho
Idaho is the stop on our growing journey. Oregon? Idaho? Idaho, yes. Since 2010, the number of people living in Idaho has grown very quickly, by 23.42%. But people in Idaho will tell you that the state is closed. Now, let’s look at Idaho’s growth rate and West Virginia’s, which is the slowest growing state in the country. West Virginia is going backwards, in fact. The Mountain State has lost 1% of its people in the same amount of time. To give you an idea of how slow THAT is, Vermont has lost 0.25% of its population and is the next slowest growing state. West Virginia is losing the most people, by a long shot.
Texas
Hey, hey. It’s time to fight in the great state of Texas. The number of people living here has grown by 18.96%, which is huge. There are many things in Texas that are big, so they should be able to handle it. It makes sense, since five of the fifteen towns in the country with the fastest growth are all in Texas.
Why, though? I’ll tell you. Blue shirt Jobs. Oil. Low rent. Land for cheap. Little tax. A variety. Values of family. Nice weather. Everyone is nice, and there’s no bad weather. There aren’t as many rules here, and as the saying goes, once you’re a Texan, you stay a Texan.

Utah
Utah is getting bigger quickly. There are almost three times as many people living there now as there were five years ago, making it the state with the fastest population growth. Utah’s population growth wasn’t mostly due to people moving there like it is in most fast-growing states. It’s because of normal growth. That means kids. A lot of kids. The average family size in Utah is the biggest in the country. It also has the most Mormons of any state.
Florida
For the first time in a long time, we’re going east. The number of people living in Florida has grown by 18.02%, which is a place that gets a lot of attention. Florida passed New York as the third most populous state in the country in 2014.
Like many of the states with the fastest population growth, Florida’s fast population growth was mostly caused by people moving there. Nine out of ten new Floridians came from somewhere else in the US or another country. Florida is the state where the most people move from New York.
Washington
There’s no way we’re leaving the west coast for a while, so please don’t text and drive. The state of Washington is our next stop. Washington’s population has grown by 15.44% in the last ten years. Along with Washington’s strong population growth, the state’s GDP has grown at an average rate of 2.2% per year, which is the fourth fastest rate of any state.
