Three Indiana Residents Indicted in Nationwide SIM-Swapping Conspiracy; Face Identity Theft and Fraud Charges

Three Indiana residents have been charged with participating in a nationwide SIM-swapping scam. Trevon Demar Allen, Cortez Tarmar Crawford, and Indigo Kiara Graham, all of Elkhart, were taken into custody and accused of conspiring to commit fraud and identity theft. The three allegedly planned to steal money and personal information from gullible people between April 2023 and May 2024, according to the lawsuit, which was filed last Thursday. Each appeared in court for the first time in South Bend, Indiana, after being arrested.

The defendants are charged with fabricating identification documents, exchanging SIM cards for money, and stealing victims’ two-factor authentication codes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. They were able to access and embezzle victims’ money and private information through this fraudulent behavior, and they occasionally demanded payment in exchange for access to the compromised data. The plan also involved using cryptocurrency transactions to hide the illegal gains.

Graham and Crawford are also charged with aggravated identity theft related to occurrences at an El Cerrito, California, mobile service provider. They may be subject to obligatory sentences that run consecutively to any other prison term imposed if found guilty of these counts. The accusations, which were announced by FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert K. Tripp and United States Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey, indicate that federal authorities are still working to combat cybercrime.

On condition of reappearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kandis A. Westmore on December 4, all three defendants were freed. All defendants are assumed innocent and will remain so until proven guilty, according to the indictment. Each of them faces harsh punishments, such as jail time and fines, if found guilty of the charges. After a thorough FBI investigation, the prosecution is being led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle J. Kane with assistance from Kathy Tat.
