TEXAS (DDN) – One of the worst prisons in the county is in Texas, where even a simple offense may land you in jail. Texas law enforcement is quite strict regarding offenses. Do not commit any crimes or do anything illegal to avoid Texas jail time.
Due to their high inmate populations, Texas has the worst prisons in the US. Texas has approximately 842 inmates per 100,000, according to Prison Profile.
Allan B Polunsky Unit:
This prison, named after the previous Texas Board of Criminal Justice chairman, is one of the worst in Texas and possibly the nation. Death row inmates and Texas’ worst criminals live in the maximum security prison.
Since its 1993 establishment, the jail has been accused of various violent acts by guards, authorities, and inmates against each other. In this prison, murders, sexual acts, and overcrowding are minor issues.
The most difficult offenders are placed in solitary confinement, but that is not enough to keep the prison orderly.
Huntsville Unit:
Our second choice is Huntsville Unit. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice runs this 54.36-acre prison. The maximum-security prison holds 1,705 convicts. Since its 1846 opening, convicts have reported atrocities in this institution.
Since deaths, riots, sanitary difficulties, gang battles, and drug overdoses are widespread, little has been done to ameliorate the situation.

Ellis Unit:
The 1965-opened jail houses 2,073 inmates in all security levels. This jail is another of Texas’ worst and has one of the highest death row penalties, however it was moved in 2022.
Similar congestion and gang battles plague this famed institution. This jail has several murders, especially in the maximum security block. Despite many faults, the jail is the finest secured in Texas, and the guard-to-inmate ratio has helped control disturbances.
Ferguson Unit:
In Midway, Texas, the all-male facility struggles with gang violence, illiteracy, and drug addiction. Former convicts say they get small meals and little clean clothing.
Guards have also been known to neglect air conditioning, making detainees’ lives difficult, especially in summer.
George Beto Unit:
We rank the George Beto Unit, an all-male maximum security prison called the “worst place in Texas,” fifth. This prison is unsafe because hygiene is a serious issue for authorities. In 2016, Vice reported inmates feces at officers and other convicts.
After opening in 1980, the unit was reasonably tranquil, but as it aged and services dried up, inmates found new ways to disgrace their rivals.

Wayne Scott Unit:
The Wayne Scott Unit is in unincorporated Brazoria County, Texas. The 1839 penitentiary is one of Texas’ oldest. After the prison’s white man inmate rule was lifted in 1963, things escalated. Gang fighting and horrific murders increased as racial tensions peaked.
Although racial tensions have decreased over time, they remain fragile and can flare up at any time in the institution. An epidemic of rape occurs in this prison.
Terrell Unit:
The 1983-founded Charles T. Terrell Unit in Brazoria County, Texas, is a minimal security facility. Drug overdose was centered in prison. An inquiry in 2008 found the guards smuggled narcotics and other forbidden things into the facility. After an investigation, officials took stern action, but prison drug use persists.
