Towson Restaurant Owner Assaulted, Community Rallies Amidst Surge in Local Violence

Masaud Atharis, a local restaurant owner in Towson, was brutally attacked just outside his eatery, Kerb. Fox Baltimore said that Atharis challenged someone he saw urinating near his business, which quickly turned into a physical brawl. Atharis described the perilous sequence of events that resulted in his beating: “He finished his business while I’m trying to you know, get ahold of them, and as I’m turning, he punches me in the face.”

When one of the attackers pulled out a gun after Atharis tried to pursue him, the scene became more heated. “Once he got the chance to get free to run away, I tried to chase him,” he said, as reported by Fox Baltimore. “Do you want one?” he asked, drawing the rifle at that moment. With 360 attacks reported near Atharis’ eatery, this assault adds to the alarming uptick in violence in the downtown Towson region.

The attack was caught on camera, giving CBS News a firsthand look at the altercation between Atharis and the gang outside Kerb. I caught him by his sweatshirt after he punched me, and as we rolled over, I fell between the two automobiles. He was standing over me. Atharis described the tumultuous incident that transpired to the station: “I was holding him and then his other partner attacked my co-workers.” After arriving on the scene, Baltimore County Police are currently looking through security footage to determine who the culprits are.

Atharis, an Iranian immigrant who came to the United States in 2007 in search of a better life, has received support from the community in response to the attack. “He’s a foreigner. In an interview with CBS News, local student Kareem Jaman confirmed, “He’s coming to this country for a better life.”
