DURHAM, N.C. (DDN) – A truck driver is currently in recovery at the hospital following an incident where a tractor-trailer overturned on I-85 South in Durham on Wednesday night, according to police reports.
A single-vehicle accident involving a semi resulted in the closure of I-85 South for several hours, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The agency announced that the highway has been completely reopened shortly before 2 a.m., following a closure that lasted nearly 3 hours.
The Durham Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to a vehicle collision at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, occurring on I-85 close to U.S. Highway 70.
According to the investigation, the semi was making its way from US-70 to merge onto I-85 South when the driver lost control and collided with a barrier, resulting in the tractor-trailer overturning. The truck driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Emergency responders, including teams from the Durham Police Department, labored until approximately 2 a.m. to resolve the situation at the scene.
Numerous teams were actively engaged across Durham County, responding to incidents caused by treacherous road conditions stemming from the winter weather storms affecting the region.
One of the incidents included a massive pileup involving over 50 vehicles, which occurred with another tractor-trailer on I-40 at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday near the Durham/Orange County border. The State Highway Patrol reports that the incident was a result of two additional collisions that took place close to the I-40/I-85 junction.
A tragic incident occurred on I-40, resulting in the death of 78-year-old Jerolyn Day Wilson from Burlington due to injuries sustained in the crash. A 44-year-old truck driver from South Carolina, William Crowell Kellam, faces charges of misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed for conditions following the crash.
