Tragic Death of Toddler in Sledding Accident, Five People Hospitalized After Ice Rescue Attempt

DDN – A toddler died in a sledding accident, and five individuals who attempted to help were taken to the hospital, according to North Carolina officials.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said that teams from many departments were dispatched to a golf course early Saturday, January 11. The child was rescued from the water, transported to a hospital, and eventually died as a result of the accident-related injuries.

“Two first responders and three civilians who assisted with the rescue were also transported to a local hospital for medical examination,” the sheriff’s office stated on Facebook.

According to spokesperson Bria Evans, the tragedy occurred when the child fell into a body of water in Whitsett, about 15 miles east of Greensboro. Over the weekend, the National Weather Service reported that the area received more than 2 inches of snow and 0.04 inches of freezing rain.

Samantha Dunnington, the wife of a fireman, stated that her husband was rushed to the hospital for hypothermia, frostbite, and hand injuries after breaking through the ice at the scene.

WFMY reported that another firefighter was treated for hypothermia and that both first responders were released from the hospital.

As of Jan. 11, deputies were still investigating the child’s death. On January 13, the sheriff’s office did not immediately share any new information with McClatchy News.
