DDN – On Saturday afternoon near Corvallis, a train derailed and fell into the Marys River due to a trestle structural failure.
The train, operated by Portland & Western Railroad, was hauling what officials described as “agricultural materials” at the time of the incident.
Multiple sources claim that it was transporting urea, a chemical substance used as a fertilizer. Booms have been deployed to contain any potentially released materials, according to a Corvallis Police press release.
There were no injuries recorded.
The incident occurred at 12:08 p.m., when the train gave out while crossing a trestle, resulting in “one train car entering the river and two additional train cars becoming unstable,” according to the release.
Emergency response teams, including the Corvallis Fire Department and Corvallis Police, were “working to stabilize the situation and ensure public safety” on Saturday afternoon, according to officials.
“For the safety of emergency responders, recovery teams, and all personnel involved, we request that the public avoid the area.” “Please follow all roadblocks, detours, and directions from local authorities as recovery efforts continue,” the news release stated.
According to the announcement, environmental recovery specialists are committed to addressing the situation promptly and with minimal environmental impact.
