DDN – Michigan State Police are reminding drivers about the state’s Move Over Law.
Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law took effect in 2019. It required drivers to reduce their speed to 10 mph below the stated limit and cede their lane while overtaking police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
The caution comes as police release video of a December 12 crash on I-75 in Oakland County. Three Michigan State Police troopers were investigating a crash at the 11 Mile Road ramp and had parked their patrol cars on the left shoulder and in the left lane, with their emergency lights turned on to protect the crash area.
According to officials, a huge truck attempted to use the left lane to pass slowing traffic and exit the road. and
The huge vehicle drove along the left shoulder, approaching two troopers and a tow truck driver who were near the original incident and had to leap the median wall to avoid being hit.
According to officials, the semi truck came to a stop after colliding with an empty car involved in the first incident.
A trooper was brought to a neighboring hospital for treatment and then released. Nobody else got hurt.
The driver of the semi truck was arrested for reckless driving.
Drivers must slow down and move over for stalled emergency vehicles. If cars are unable to move over owing to traffic, weather, or other road conditions, they must slow down and proceed with caution.
Drivers who do not pull over or slow down may receive a ticket with a $400 fine and two points on their license. If a driver injures or kills someone, it becomes a felony punishable by considerable jail time.
