WHITE OAK, Pa. — Two dogs that were shockingly abandoned in taped-up cardboard boxes outside a Giant Eagle grocery store in White Oak have found their way to the loving care of a local animal shelter.
The unsettling discovery occurred around noon on Friday when a passerby noticed two boxes taped shut, with movement coming from inside. Upon opening the boxes, he realized they contained two dogs. The man quickly took the boxes to White Oak Animal Safe Haven, where the pups were rescued and brought inside.
“I had trouble understanding him at first. And then when it dawned on me that the boxes were moving, I realized there’s dogs in there,” said Mackenzie Demme, an animal care specialist at White Oak Animal Safe Haven. Despite their troubling abandonment, Demme reassured that the dogs appeared to be in good health.
“Their nails were a bit long, but other than that, they seem healthy and well-fed,” Demme added.
Unfortunately, shelters like White Oak Animal Safe Haven are experiencing an increasing number of abandoned animals. “Shelters are constantly at max capacity, and there are so many animals in need of homes that it’s really hard to find homes anymore,” Demme explained. This case highlights the growing problem of animal abandonment, with local shelters struggling to keep up with the demand for resources and space.
The two dogs, who are now under the shelter’s care, will be evaluated by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and then made ready for adoption. “We just ask that people please get their pets spayed and neutered,” Demme urged. “Please be patient with animal rescue workers. We’re at max capacity at all times. We can’t always help in these situations, but today we were fortunate enough to be able to.”
The shelter is calling on the public for assistance in identifying who may have abandoned the dogs. If anyone saw something suspicious at the Giant Eagle or has information about the incident, they are encouraged to contact White Oak Animal Safe Haven at (412) 672-8901 or call White Oak police.
As these two pups begin their journey to find a forever home, the shelter is a reminder of the importance of compassion and the need for patience in the face of overwhelming circumstances.
