Two New York men accused of stealing used cooking oil from Massachusetts businesses

In addition to announcing two arrests, police are seeking assistance from the public.

Police say that used cooking oil has been stolen from storage containers belonging to local companies in recent months. Generally speaking, companies can sell this spent cooking oil to suppliers who will recycle it to create new goods like sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.

Last night, two people who had just stolen cooking oil from a Main Street business were apprehended by Bourne patrol division officers and Detectives unit members conducting surveillance of possible business targets, bringing Operation Midnight Oil to a head. These people are thought to be involved in similar thefts throughout the state. There is still an open investigation, and further charges could be brought.

Both Yonkers, New York residents Gilberto Rodriguez, 35, and Oliver Cruz, 36, were taken into custody and charged with breaking and entering a depository, larceny under $1200, and conspiracy.

Police are requesting anyone with information about similar thefts in the region because this is an ongoing investigation.

Please call the Detectives Division Tip Line at 774-247-5627 or send an email to [email protected] if you have any information you would like to provide.
