U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark’s Daughter, Riley Dowell, Charged During Boston Anti-Abortion Rally

U.S. Representative Katherine Clark’s 24-year-old daughter, Riley Dowell, was taken into custody during a fight at the National Men’s March, an anti-abortion demonstration in Boston, over the weekend. After reportedly obstructing the march in Kenmore Square, Dowell was charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with lawful assembly and was arrested on Monday, according to Boston 25 News.

Boston 25 News reports that Dowell had previously run afoul of the law. She was arrested in January 2023 for assaulting a Boston police officer and spray-painting a public landmark. She received a one-year probationary sentence that included writing an apology letter to the officer who had been assaulted.

Every American has the right to protest and speak up for their opinions, but they must do so responsibly and peacefully, said her mother, Rep. Clark, the second-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House, in a cautious and due process-respecting response to the incident. As the situation started to garner more public attention, Boston 25 News was given this statement.

Dowell was among several people arrested at the Clown March, which was a counter-protest to the anti-abortion demonstration. When the demonstrators were spotted on the Boston Common, tensions increased. According to MassLive, the Boston Police reported that at least five counter-protesters had been arrested for assaulting a police officer by midday. It’s unclear exactly what these attacks were like or whether they had anything to do with Dowell’s behavior.

Barricades were erected before the marchers arrived, indicating the impending confrontation between the two diametrically opposed factions, and Boston’s Parkman Bandstand became a fortified point of controversy. According to the Boston Police, at least nine persons were taken into custody overall as a result of the events over the weekend. As the community and the country observe the consequences of these activities on the urgent abortion rights discussion and public demonstration, the unfolding story keeps getting worse.
