University of Mobile Mourns Sudden Death of Freshman Basketball Player Kaiden Francis

The tragic death of Kaiden Francis, a freshman basketball player from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who fell and died on the Alabama campus early Tuesday morning—the cause of death is still unknown—has left the University of Mobile community grieving deeply.Francis’s condition was irreparable, according to NBC Miami, even with the prompt assistance of students and on-site medical personnel.

“Despite the swift and valiant efforts of students and medical professionals, Kaiden never recovered and passed away earlier today,” said University President Charles Smith in a letter to the students and faculty, describing the immense sadness that pervaded the campus. As we deal with this tragedy, our hearts are heavy,” NBC Miami said.

To commemorate Francis’s memory, the university, which has around 2,000 students enrolled, canceled classes yesterday and held a vigil. In addition, the University of Mobile Rams’ official page offered condolences and urged everyone to pray for Kaiden’s family and friends.

On social media, head basketball coach Darnell Archey expressed his sorrow at the passing while remembering Francis’s dedication to the sport and his lively demeanor. Archey added, “Yesterday morning Kaiden Francis, freshman point guard from Fort Lauderdale unexpectedly passed away after doing what he loved to do, working on his craft in the gym,” underscoring Francis’s influence on and off the court. According to NBC Miami, Kaiden was only beginning his career on the court, but his smile and upbeat attitude were evident from day one.

According to NBC Miami, Smith recalled watching Francis play just last week and said, “He was profoundly gifted and clearly loved by his teammates,” in his letter to the university community.
