Upcoming Weekend Closures on Southbound M-53 in Michigan for Bridge Repairs

Commuters in Michigan will need to adjust their routes as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced temporary but significant closures for bridge work on the southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway). The ongoing $16 million infrastructure project is focusing on improvements between M-59 (Hall Road) and 18 Mile Road in Utica. As reported on the

MDOT website

, this development comes due to rideability issues requiring attention to the bridge over the Clinton River.

The process is set to ensure a smoother riding surface and better drainage, thus necessitating the freeway’s closure for three consecutive weekends. The specifics are as follows: from 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, from 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, and again from 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25. During these periods, southbound M-53 traffic will need to quickly detour via westbound M-59, southbound Mound Road, and eastbound 18 Mile Road back to southbound M-53 in an effort to manage the disruption.

In light of this adjustment, local businesses and residents along these routes may need to prepare for increased traffic and potential delays. For those commuting within these zones, the MDOT encourages allowing extra journey time and planning to navigate around the closures.

The disruption doesn’t end there, however. Northbound M-53 upgrades, initiated back in August, have similarly had their completion date postponed to the end of the month. Investigations into the state of the Utica Road bridge revealed conditions more deteriorated than initial assessments suggested. The project extends beyond merely to reconstitute what was already laid down. It is part of the broader initiative to ensure Michigan’s roadways are safe and reliable, safeguarding commuters against the wear of time and elements.
