Virgin Hotels Las Vegas Workers Strike Ahead of Grand Prix, Demanding New Contract and Improved Wages

Approximately 700 employees in the hospitality industry at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas have gone on strike as the Las Vegas Grand Prix draws near. Workers from departments including food services and cleaning, represented by the Culinary Union, are calling for a five-year contract that includes pay increases and workplace protections. Negotiations have not yet resulted in an agreement, and the previous contract terminated in June.

According to News 3 Las Vegas, the timing of the strike increases pressure as the Las Vegas Grand Prix draws near, which is a busy time for the hospitality industry. The last round of talks ended without a deal. “In negotiations, the company’s proposal works out to an estimated $0.30 per year to wages over five years after deducting money for benefits, compared to non-tipped workers at The Strat, who received over $4.00 an hour in wage increases this year alone!” said Ted Pappageorge, the Culinary Secretary-Treasurer, in response to the company’s proposal.

In contrast to a 48-hour strike earlier this year, the Culinary Union has proclaimed this one to be open-ended. This strategy is similar to the 2002 indefinite strike at the Golden Gate. In addition, the union is urging residents and tourists to show solidarity by choosing union-backed lodging, respecting the picket line, and canceling reservations.

Virgin Hotels emphasized the union’s tardy reaction to their June offering and voiced sadness about the failure of recent labor negotiations. “After we waited several months for the Union to respond to our June proposal and return to the table, their unconstructive approach and bad faith bargaining today was another disappointment,” the business said, according to Fox 5 Vegas.
