After three Virginia males were arrested for allegedly participating in a roofing scam that targeted senior citizens, San Mateo County became the subject of a police investigation. The KTVU report claims that the suspects overcharged for poor and frequently needless services by using fictitious contractor licenses.
The investigation started in November 2023 after San Mateo police received a tip about a group of people with Irish accents posing as “Statewide Roofing and Siding.” When one victim realized his mother was being wildly overcharged for roofing work that was never done, the fraud was exposed. Police later discovered that similar scams had been reported after coordinating with other Peninsula departments. Charlie Anderson, David Anderson, and Darren Temple will be arraigned on December 5 after the San Mateo County District Attorney revealed charges against them on social media.
After a preliminary hearing, C. Anderson (22), Temple (40), and D. Anderson (40) were held to answer on 29 counts in connection with their fraudulent roofing scam against an elderly person. On May 7, a man went to the police because he thought his mother had been duped by a company that had first promised a “free” roof assessment. The suspect’s first assertions of modest repairs swiftly escalated into an expensive declaration that the entire roof needed to be replaced.
This scam’s victims were tricked by business names that seemed professional, such “Teco Roofing and Masonry.” Police found that phony names were being used during their investigation, indicating that the scam involved more than one company label. Following their apprehension on May 8, the suspects were charged with stealing from dependent people or the elderly. The investigation is still ongoing, and police are looking for any other victims.
