Wanted Man Wounded in Shootout with Nashville Police on Lewis Street

Early this morning, a 21-year-old man identified as Knykholas Lane, wanted for charges of domestic violence, engaged in a shootout with police and was injured in the process. The confrontation took place on Lewis Street in Napier housing. Lane, who was armed and has a history of domestic violence, opened fire on an officer responding to a distress call from his estranged girlfriend, prompting the officer to return fire and wounding him, according to theMetropolitan Nashville Police Department.

The incident was reportedly initiated when Lane’s estranged girlfriend, who has a child with him, called the police at 12:50 a.m. She claimed that Lane was attempting to forcefully enter her apartment. Hermitage Precinct Officer Eric Ziegler who was the first to arrive, witnessed Lane quickly flee, and after ordering him to come forward, faced gunfire from Lane’s semi-automatic pistol. In an attempt to immediately disarm the situation, Ziegler returned fire, shooting Lane in the leg and buttocks. Ziegler then provided aid and called for an ambulance; Lane was later treated for his injuries at Vanderbilt.

This was not Lane’s first altercation with the law. He was convicted on two counts of aggravated burglary in March 2023 and sentenced to three years of supervised probation. Following an arrest last week on a probation violation warrant, arrest warrants charging Lane with false imprisonment and domestic assault were also issued after he allegedly punched his girlfriend in the face twice and held her against her will.

Officer Ziegler, a three-year MNPD veteran, was not injured during the shootout and is now on routine administrative assignment pending investigations. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into the shooting, while the police department’s Office of Professional Responsibility is also conducting an administrative investigation to ensure protocols were properly followed. In keeping with transparency efforts, in-car and body-worn camera footage from the incident has been made publicly available. Interested individuals are encouraged to view the footage for further understanding of the events as they unfolded.
