Maurice Edwards, a 20-year-old man from Washington, D.C., was found guilty by a jury of armed carjacking and possessing a firearm during a violent felony related to an event that occurred in March of this year. The conviction was handed down on November 21, and the offender will be sentenced to a minimum of fifteen years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia. The Honorable Andrea Hertzfeld has set January 22, 2025, as the date for Edwards’ sentencing.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia, the crime scene was in the Deanwood area. Edwards, after blowing through a stop sign, collided with another vehicle and then, with a co-conspirator, took the victim’s automobile at gunpoint. The victim was traveling home from work when the collision happened at the intersection of 48th Pl. NE and Lee St. NE. Edwards’ accomplice stole the car, and in a last-ditch effort to catch the victim, who had first tried to flee through his driver’s side door, Edwards pursued and restrained him, allowing the co-conspirator to make off with the stolen vehicle.
Together with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) assumed the lead in the investigation. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the prosecution and trial were led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony Cocuzza and Mark Levy.
