Washington D.C. Man Sentenced to 10 Years for 2021 Carjacking and Related Crimes

Washington D.C. resident Kenneth Phillips, 24, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for a series of crimes back in November 2021, including carjacking, robbery, and burglary, according to a U.S. Department of Justice report. In addition to the prison term, Phillips must follow up with three years of supervised release once he completes his sentence, as the Honorable Robert A. Salerno decided on Tuesday.

Following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, a jury found Phillips guilty on counts that included carjacking, robbery, assault, burglary, first-degree theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and driving without a permit. Struck from behind by Phillips, the victim had confronted a sudden blow to the head before being relieved of his car and house keys on the evening of November 15, 2021. After a brief departure, Phillips returned only to strike the victim in the face, according to evidence presented by the

Police apprehended Phillips the next day in the early hours, finding him in possession of items belonging to the carjacking victim, including a jacket from a family member of the victim and a key fob, not to mention a college graduation ring taken from their burglarized home. Making matters worse, the victim’s family found that their house had been burglarized, as reported at 7:00 a.m. that same morning, with various items subsequently discovered on Phillips’s person and in the stolen Toyota van.

Detectives were able to corroborate these details through surveillance video from around the time of the carjacking, which showed the suspect before and during the criminal act wearing clothes matched to Phillips at his arrest. Acknowledging those who diligently worked on the case, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith from the Metropolitan Police Department released a statement that highlights the efforts of the MPD and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Assistant U.S. Attorneys Benjamin Helfand and Sara Matar, who prosecuted the case.
