Vincent Hemphill, a Washington, D.C. man, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for a violent assault at a warehouse in October 2023 that left one person dead and two others injured. Hemphill, at 63 years old, was given this sentence by Superior Court Judge Erik Christian, along with an additional 11 years of supervised release. Charged with the death of 80-year-old Brian Jefferson and the assaults on Charles Short and Jacob Othman, the defendant acted out violently following a work-related directive. As reported by the

, after being asked over a loudspeaker to move an air compressor, Hemphill attacked Jefferson with a shovel, later assaulting Short and Othman with the same shovel and a sledgehammer.

The attack resulted in the death of one co-worker, Short, who died from his injuries on January 22, and left two others, Jefferson and Othman, injured. Hemphill was convicted of voluntary manslaughter while armed and assault with intent to kill. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Benjamin Helfand and Lauren Galloway. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A.
