Waxhaw Man Charged in Fatal Matthews Crash Involving Impaired Driving

A Waxhaw man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash that happened on a busy Matthews street in August, according to police. Following the collision that killed Ramon Alberto Martinez and seriously injured another, 26-year-old Nima Justin Behrouzjou is facing a number of criminal accusations.

According to WBTV, the incident happened early on August 23 on Monroe Road between Highway 51 and Galleria Boulevard. Authorities received reports from witnesses that Behrouzjou’s 2020 BMW M340i swerved around traffic, then crossed into the oncoming lane and struck Martinez’s 2007 Honda Civic head-on. At the time of the collision, Behrouzjou was moving at 68 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, according to QC News.

Authorities found that Behrouzjou had a number of drugs in his system, including alcohol, cocaine, fentanyl, cannabis, amphetamines, and more.QC News shed light on the specifics of a warrant that revealed his level of intoxication, which most likely played a role in his vehicle’s careless operation prior to the terrible incident.

On November 4, Behrouzjou was taken into custody by the Matthews Police Department based on witness accounts and supporting documentation. He is presently being charged with criminal death by automobile, speeding, driving under the influence, reckless driving with wanton disregard, and not having an operator’s license. According to WCNC Charlottenotes, Behrouzjou, who was also hurt in the collision, is being jailed on a $100,000 secured bond. A court date set on January 23, 2025, is made possible by his grand jury indictment.

Monroe Road was closed for many hours following the collision while emergency personnel responded to the scene, where Martinez was declared dead before he could be taken to the hospital. By mid-morning, the road was finally open again.
