We continue to have faith in the reliability of data, particularly from the Census. We went there to get information about the different races in Utah. The most recent data available is from the 2018-2022 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census.

We specifically examined table B03002, which provides information on Hispanic or Latino origin by race. These are the names of the categories defined by the Census:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • White alone*
  • Black or African American alone*
  • American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
  • Asian alone*
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
  • Some other race alone*
  • Two or more races*

The specific column we were interested in was the count of individuals who identified themselves as Black or African American.

We focused our analysis on areas in Utah that have a population of more than 5,000 people and are not classified as CDPs. We were left with 82 cities. Next, we determined the proportion of residents who identify as Black or African American. The percentages range from 3.7% to 0.0%.
